Tolling Made This Unprecedented Joint Effort Possible
Funding a project of this scale took an unprecedented joint effort between Indiana and Kentucky, plus support from the Federal Highway Administration. But even those efforts fell short of the projected $2.3 billion cost. To move the project forward, leaders of both states and FHWA agreed that toll revenue would be used to fill the gap between project costs and traditional sources of transportation funding. Tolling On Ohio River Bridges to begin December 30
Tolling on the Louisville – Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project is scheduled to begin Friday, December 30. Tolled bridges include the new I-65 Abraham Lincoln Bridge, the improved I-65 Kennedy Bridge and the new East End bridge.
“Critical system testing is complete,” said Clint Murphy, director of tolling oversight for the Indiana Department of Transportation. “While system preparations are continuing, we’ve cleared the necessary hurdles to set a start date for tolling. The Ohio River Bridges Project will mean faster and safer commutes for drivers. Without tolling, this new and improved transportation system would not be possible.”
Tolling Coming Soon
The Tolling Body for the Louisville – Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project today approved a resolution for tolling to begin when final system production readiness testing is complete and representatives for the states agree the toll collection system should be implemented.
“The accuracy of all tolling transactions is paramount, which is why the entire system is undergoing such rigorous testing,” said Jim Stark, Indiana Department of Transportation deputy commissioner of innovative project delivery. “When we as a Body have confirmed that the system is fully operational, tolling will begin.”
RiverLink Motorcycle Transponders
Motorcyclists who have been waiting to open RiverLink accounts have a recommendation on which transponder to use.
It’s recommended that motorcyclists use a RiverLink E-ZPass transponder, and purchase a transponder holder that works best for their motorcycle and needs. Several options can be found through third-party vendors with an online search.
